Legislation Updates

  • DTI to compel traders not to use 'made in Israel' labels

    18 May 2012, 1:48 pm | Business Day

According to a report, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is preparing a notice compelling traders in South Africa (SA) not to label products originating from occupied Palestinian territories as products of Israel and this notice could deal Israeli companies wanting to do business in SA a heavy blow and negatively affect local retail giants that stock Israeli merchandise. This comes after human rights lobby group Open Shuhada Street has been urging government to issue a notice requiring all products made in "illegal" Israeli settlements to be labelled as such.

  • Malema ally takes SARS to court in bid to stop judicial inquiry

    18 May 2012, 1:46 pm | Mail & Guardian

According to a report, a former business associate of expelled African National Congress (ANC) Youth League president Julius Malema, Lesiba Gwangwa, has taken the South African Revenue Service (SARS) to court in a bid to set aside the judicial inquiry established to investigate suspected tax evasion and other related offences. It is widely believed that SARS established the inquiry into the affairs of Gwangwa, other businesspeople close to him and Malema in order to obtain comprehensive evidence that can be used against the embattled former youth league leader for allegedly accepting kickbacks through his Ratanang family trust in exchange for influencing tender decisions in several departments in Limpopo.
